Re: Should I get a refund for Affiliate Project X?

Fellow internet marketer,

Let's get something dead straight before we start.

I hate hyped products. I hate them more than you do, and I always have.

Really, I do. And if you give me a few seconds I will tell you why.

But first, let me tell you my story with internet marketing. I started about 3 months ago. At first, I was overloaded with the information that is out there. I got a few of the popular programs out there: the Rich Jerk, Google Cash, Google Profits and then I stumbled upon the Wealthy Affiliate through a friend's recommendation. Once I discovered Wealthy Affiliate, I was hooked. I was literaly glued (much to the dismay of my wife and two boys) to my computer screen trying to absorb as much of the wisdom shared in the private forum as possible. At that point I realized I had everything that I needed to succeed and I decided not to buy another eBook on Affiliate marketing again.

Until I ran into Adwords Miracle. I resisted for a while, but I read positive review, after positive review, so I eventually gave in. Afterall, I was protected by the bold money back guarantee. If I am not making $300/day after 56 days, I get my money back. Who would turn that down?

So I went ahead and bought it. Was I impressed? Yes and no. It is an excellent book in absense of a standard to compare it with and the bonuses and resources that come with it are great. However, did I learn anything new? Not much that wasn't covered in more detail in Wealthy Affiliate. In fact the resources in Wealthy Affiliate are hands down the best resources on Google Adwords that I've seen so far. Nontheless, Adwords Miracle provided a good treatment of Adwords. The more important question though is: did Adwords Miracle deliver what it promised? The answer is an unfortunate NO!

Did I get a refund? No. I'll tell you why in a few seconds....

And then Affiliate Project X came along, the second book by the same author Chris McNeeney. Chris is really an artist when it comes to hype. His two videos and the way he excuted their delivery along with his emails are nothing short of a class act. Hec, when Affiliate Project X was released, I didn't even have to read the sales letter. I scrolled to the bottom of the page and bought it as fast as I could. I was going to make $500/day starting tomorrow. Was I wrong!

Yes, it was a very well put together book that I felt has excellent value on its own. Did I learn anything new however? Not much here either. He only covers six main techniques and a few other tips and tricks:

The Leech: This method, while Chris puts his own spin on it, isn't hard to figure out if you have been in the IM business for a few months. Every smart marketer knows that Trademark keywords convert much better than general keywords. So there was not much benefit for me here. In fact, his pre-launch video shows you an exact example of this method and he even gives you permission to copy it. Here's the example: www.killyourjob.com.

Affiliate Diary: Here is a nice short and sweet summary on how to make money while building your list with adwords. However, it's quite brief. For a fuller discussion of the very important topic of list building I highly recommend Inside the List.

The Workhorse Method: This is an excellent fool proof way for anyone starting in internet marketing to make real money fast without risking any investment but time. This method is however nothing more than Article Marketing. I was fortunate to have learned this method before Affiliate Project X from within Wealthy Affiliate again. So I didn't really benefit much from this method at all.

The Opportunist Method: There is some real value here that I haven't come across before. The concept is familiar, picking rising stars and riding the wave. Chris is really talented at taking general concepts and putting simple logical systematic guiding principles to derive the most benefit of those general concepts. In other words he has the ability to crystalize nebulous concepts into a concrete fool proof formula. The concept maybe familiar to most people, yet many don't know how to really benefit from it. Here Chris gives you systematic instructions on how to pick rising stars.

Thief in the Night: It's a method on how to spy on super affiliates. This method is flawed in many ways and I didn't find much value in it at all. What good is it to find out what Chris is promoting when you don't know exactly how he's promoting it, where he's promoting it, and the value added that he provides his customers. This was a waste for me. Moreover, it's very sly and questionable.

Copy The Best: This a solid proven technique. However, it's also common knowledge. Just head over to Keyword Elite and watch the videos that Brad Callen made and you're in business. (hint: the name of the technique gives it away :)) It was also widely discussed in Wealthy Affiliate. In fact Wealthy Affiliate provides a free tool to all members that allows them to do just this, so you don't have to actually buy Keyword Elite.

That's about it. Just 35-40 pages of worthwhile tips and information.

The real problem that I have with Affiliate Project X is that there is a lot of hype and the product doesn't live up to the promises of the sales letter. No wonder the return rate is a large 19%.

And if you want another independant review of someone who's not trying to make a quick buck selling Project X, check out Eric Holmlund's review. He's a super affiliate and he's done a good review of it.

Chris is very brilliant and extremly clever. He really shines in the area of product launch, creating the necessary hype, and then following up with killer sales letters. However, his products fail to deliver the promises made. When I logically consider if Affiliate Project X was worth the money I paid for it, the conclusion I come to is that I should get a refund. However, part of me wants to keep the book. It's afterall the informaion that all the Gurus are keeping from you. With all due respect, that's a lie, but for some reason he was able to ingrain that message so deep in many people. Common, wouldn't we all want to hold on to "I know what the Gurus are keeping away from me," even if it was just a myth?

Forbidden marketing tactics at its best. And...oh my. The recent fiasco with Chris giving a whole bunch of affiliates the same exact websites with the same canned pre-sell text in exchange for getting a nice commission from the hosting company is just wrong. You know what I am talking about....the "where you part of internet history" rehtoric. The worst part is he gives them all the same keywords to fight over. Who's the real beneficiary here?

That's exactly why I am upset. Hyped up sales letters that try to cash in on unsuspecting people.

I am not saying there is no value in Project X. It's has a good collection of techniques and tips that can really expand someone's horizons if they were not aware of them. But, and that's a big but, the product doesn't live up to the sales page at all, and that's deceptive as far as I am concerned.

Having said all that, putting that last point aside, about the sales letters being overly hyped, is the value of the book woth the money?

The book definitely has value. Chris does share some excellent tips and techniques. While it's true that you can find that information elsewhere, Chris does a good job of putting them together. However, I think the price tag is a bit high for what's being offered and that there are better places you can spend your hard earned money.

There is also one very very important point. Chris gives the impression that by buying his book you'll be on your way to compete with the Gurus. While some of the audience buying Project X maybe ready to do so, this is a false and very dangerous impression for most. You can really do yourself a lot more harm than good following some of his techniques without the necessary experience under your belt.

Someone who is just starting with adwords should look for a support structure, not one or two or three eBooks. There is definitely a large learning curve, and if you don't have the proper support you can lose a lot of money and get very frustrated. Sure there are some people that get lucky in their first go at it, but they're not likely to replicate that success again without undergoing the learning curve.

I have personally found Wealthy Affiliate to be best support structure out there and definitely much more worthwhile, and much more value for my money than Adwords Miracle of Affiliate Project X. You get a much more thorough treatment of google adwords, marketing research techniques, excellent resources, a very active and knowledgeable forum, and best of all, personal coaching from Kyle and Carson themselves, the founders of Wealthy Affiliate.

Checkout their sales letter and compare it with the Affiliate Project X or the Adwords Miralce Sales letter. There is no hype, just straight honest selling. Unlike Project X, with Wealthy Affiliate once you join, you realize that they undersell and overdeliver. I've spend a couple of month reading through the forums and absorbing as much information as possible, and I can tell you, you won't find the same information in such a supportive environment elsewhere. No name calling, no idle chatting, no rubbish. Just pure refined gold.

The same owners of Wealthy Affilate have an eBook dealing with Google Adwords and Affiliate marketing, Beating Adwords. In my opinion it is one of the best products and most updated products on the topic of affiliate marketing using PPCs. The sales page is also imbued with the same straight honest selling approach, no false promises, no hype. It's for people that appreciate real honest business and are not looking for empty promises on making thousands over night.

In conclusion, I do think Adwords Miracle, and Affiliate Project X have a lot of value. If you have money to spare go ahead and buy them. If however you want to be careful about where you spend your money, get the most value for your money, and seriously put in the effort to become successful, then you would do better with Beating Adwords and Wealthy Affiliates. For the price of either of Chris's products you get more than a 3months membership at Wealthy Affiliate, and I gurantee you, from the first day, you'll realize the tremedous value that it is.

If you do decide to join wealthy Affiliate, I'll see on the inside. One final tip, make sure to browse the forums, search for all the posts by Kyle, Carson, and especially Travis, a very successful marketer and gentleman who holds nothing back in his desire to see people succeed.

If you have any questions feel free to email me. I've put together a Q/A page with answers to questions I receive.

Are you still here? Go ahead and check out Wealthy Affiliate and Beating Adwords.
